My West coast friends know that In-N-Out is arguably one of the best burgers around, and we can all agree that it’s a classic California staple. However, I’m known to call it “In-N-Wait” because the lines are incredibly long, no matter what time of day, whether you go through the drive-thru or walk inside.

I’ve put together this recipe for all of those times you’re craving the burger but not the wait times – and possibly a (little) healthier alternative. Of course, a burger and fries is a burger and fries, but I’ve created my very own version of In-N-Out’s famous animal-style®, protein-style (no bun) burger complete with THE most delicious animal sauce which you can find the recipe for here.

“In 1948, In-N-Out introduced the two-way speaker box to offer the first drive-thru experience.”

Animal-Style® Protein-Style Burgers (Made Vegan)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Vegan Ground Meat (fresh, not frozen)
  • 2 sprigs Green Onion (chopped)
  • 1 tbsp Garlic (chopped)
  • 2 tsp Garlic Salt
  • 3 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
  • 2 tbsp Vegan Worcestershire Sauce (see recipe on blog)
  • 1 head Iceburg Lettuce
  • 1/4 Red Onion
  • 1-2 slices Vegan Cheese (my favorite brands are Chao and Follow Your Heart)

Instructions

  • Mix vegan ground meat in a bowl together with chopped green onions, garlic, garlic salt, onion powder, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Fold ingredients together gently to combine. Add more Worcestershire sauce if mixture feels dry or chunky.
  • Combine ingredients in bowl into one large ball, then, remove from bowl and separate into 2-4 round balls and smush to form patties.
  • Heat skillet to medium high heat and cook patties until browned on both sides. If you prefer to melt your cheese with your patty, add cheese when the second side of your patty is halfway through cooking. Since you are using vegan meat, make sure to cook the full way through.
  • Remove patties from skillet and carefully place in between lettuce before topping with vegan cheese (if you didn't add this in the previous step), onions, and animal sauce (see recipe on blog).
Bon Appétit!
