As I prepare for my next exciting adventure to paradise (Bali, here I come!), I can’t help but reminisce on my trip to the Bahamas. I had never been to the Caribbean before, so I was definitely excited to cure my island fever during the middle of winter on this trip.

We took a cruise ship down to the Bahamas, where we stopped in the port at Grand Bahamas before venturing over to Carnival Cruise Lines’ private island: Cococay. On Grand Bahamas island, we squeezed inside a tiny van with no air conditioning and hauled over to the nearest beach. Since it was during Christmas time, I remember us listening to a Bahamian version of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ – it was hilarious! Once on the beach, I traipsed around the rocks and wandered my way over to an abandoned dock, which was eerily beautiful in a way to me.

As you can imagine, Cococay is very different from the rest of the Bahamas. Grass shack bars every few hundred feet (or in the middle of the ocean) serving tropical-inspired cocktails, a free delicious barbecue meal, hammocks tied to numerous palm trees, and vendors lining the walkways. The water here was magnificent – some of the clearest water I’ve seen – plus, the water was shallow for what seemed like miles, so I was able to walk all the way out into the middle of the water and splash around without actually having to go great lengths to swim out there. I also had a little too much fun and ended up sitting on my favorite sunglasses and breaking them, so I was shade-less for the rest of the tropical trip, which was definitely not fun, but it was pretty funny at the time!

You might say I’m a bit of an island baby; my mom is from Hawaii, and my family lived there for a few years before moving back to mainland USA. For the years following that, I grew up visiting my grandparents on the Big Island and because of this, I always daydream of being in a bikini in the clear, warm ocean water, laying in the shade of a palm tree, and enjoying the most beautiful sunsets on the planet. So, naturally, every chance I get to travel, the first thing that comes to mind is a tropical escape, which is why on my next trip, I’ll be heading over to the Indonesian island of Bali! Follow me to this dreamy, gypsy strewn island in the next two months! I’ll be sure to capture every single detail 😉

xx.
